INterview about mixing 2011 mar

1. What is the process or order in recording a song(s) or steps that are taken?
There’s no set rules in regards to producing a great song. However, there are some common things that are commonly done.
Mic selection/and placment: choosing the right mic for the source and placing it to best capture the instrument.
Recordings each instrument separately: This is done either with or without a click track. Some productions require a tight groove and thus a click track acts us a guide to help everyone record in time. Other productions are more organic and don’t require a click track/metronome, this also has benefits as some songs slow down and speed up as per the bands natural inner groove.
Selecting/editing/arrangment: Before mixing the raw recordings, the band and the producer will go through each record takes and edit the best bits from all the various takes. – this creates a best OFF snapshot of the recorded parts.
Tidying and clean up - this ensures that edits don’t clip or create pops and erroneous noises and thuds are removed from the recorded audio files prior to mixing.
Mixing: This is process involves balancing Levels, frequencies distribution (via eq ), and stereo imaging (via panning l r). Also FX like delays and reverb or modulation effects such as Chorus, flanger etc are add to create interest to the mix. The art of mixing is to present the recorded materical in the most musical way that enhances the emotional content/prose of the song. Mixing has no rules - this is the common believe from industry/seasoned professionals.

2. What type of software is used (or you specifically use) in the recording and/or editing of music?
DAW of choice: Logic Studio

3. What type of microphone would you recommend for recording and why?
I love my m149, it’s a beautiful hi-end tube microphone which is perfect for vocal recordings – male and female.

4. What are your rates for the use of your studio and recording music?
$66- $140 / hr

5. If I were to record at home, are you aware of any programmes I could use or recommend any software that may be useful?
Logic Express (lite version of logic studio)

6. Do you as a studio allow people cover current artists’ tracks or do consumers need to present their own music and lyrics?
Yes, but copyright clearance is the responsibility of the artist and not the recording studio. The licensing can be obtained via APRA in OZ or via Harry fox agency in US.

Good luck with you research ☺

Happiness

Well, I just read that "The happiest people don't have the best of everything, they just make the best of everything they have." imho, the most Happiest of people are the ones that seem to get everything they want and never have to make do. Nevertheless, getting everything you want may not always make you happy. Happiness ilIudes most of us sometimes, if only the state of happiness were as easy a conscious decision to be happy, then it would be very easy to just think yourself into a state of happiness whenever you like. From past observation, we as a society tend to treasure the things that don't come easy and unconsciously overlook the simple things in life. Happiness is relative and never constant. For example, a modern man wishing for fresh drinking water doesn't think twice about filling his glass with water from a tap - quenching his thirst doesn't make him happy, whilst this very same man stranded on a dessert safari would be over joyed just to get one bottle of water he needs to survive.

Physical stress ie. lack of rest/sleep, or mental stress, the inability to cope with a certain task, or when reality is far from your expectations can lead to being unhappy.

The solution is simple. Rest. Work. And Play in moderation. Balance is the key to achieving a happier life. They are two sides to every one, dark and light, good vs evil - which is why the most evilest of people can do the most heroic of deeds and the trusted most honorable of people can abuse and defile the most sacred of things. Next time you hang out with someone, observe if you bring out the worst or best in them? Are you the cause of someone unhappiness? or are you the source of someone's joy?

logic wave burner saves folder problem.

The latest update for logic 8 to 9, corrupts wave burner's saving function rendering it useless to save your work.

Here's the problem.

when you save a project, it saves it as a folder.

to rectify this issue you need to open the waveburner application by right clicking it and select "show package contents"

Then go to folder ...WaveBurner.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj

Open the file infoPlist.strings and change the line
"WaveBurner 3 Document" = "WaveBurner 3 Document";
to
"WaveBurner 3 Document" = "wb3";

Save it and now you can read the .wb3 again.

Also, add the extension .wb3 to previously saved waveburner folders to reload them.

There's more info here.

embracing imperfection

Here's an encouraging email I got about:

Embracing Imperfection

How True and Wise, A story by a girl.

"When I was a little girl, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work.

On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and extremely burned toast in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed!
Yet all my dad did was reach for his toast, smile at my mom, and ask me how my day was at school.
I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that toast and eat every bite!

When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologized to my dad for burning the toast. And I'll never forget what he said: 'Baby, I love burned toast.'
Later that night, I went to kiss daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his toast burned.

He wrapped me in his arms and said, 'Debbie, your Momma put in a hard day at work today and

she's real tired. And besides-a little burnt toast never hurt anyone!' You know,
Life is full of imperfect things......
and imperfect people.
I'm not the best housekeeper or cook.'

What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults - and choosing to

celebrate each other's differences - is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of GOD. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where burnt toast isn't a deal-breaker! We could extend this to any relationship in fact - as understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!! "

"Don't put the key to your happiness
in someone else's pocket
but into your own."
See through God's eyes and feel through God's heart
And you will appreciate the value of
every soul including yourself.

accept people. it makes you happier.

peace.

Music the life blood of Itunes, Ipods, Music Videos, Radio.

Music is a big factor that makes money for

Radio Stations
MP3 players
Radio
TV shows
Advertising Agencies
Microphone Companies
Software Companies eg. protools, waves , apple etc
Churches
Dance Clubs
Rave Parties
Concerts
Instrument Makers

Without music and fans of music, there wouldn't be a need for a mp3 player. We wouldn't have music to enhance our favourite blockbuster movies. We would have music radio stations.

If music can make money for so many companies, why is it that Artist, Musicians, Record Producers etc get so little?

Music is the equivalent of a raw product. It's worth very little, but is the foundation that supports commerce and big multinational companies. Just look how much IPOD makes for apple!!!

Musicians/Artist are like our Farmers. They invest much resources into their crops and get very little back from it. The Giant grocery supermarket chains on the otherhand are exploiting Farmers by dictating lower prices for higher quality.

In the 21 century with the accessibility of recording gear and Digital Audio work stations to the masses, music can be produced for very little cost. You see social music networking sites like myspace, soundclick with MILLIONS of artist all with their own beats and songs produced at home. The competition is greater now then 10 years ago.

The law of economy states that with greater competition comes a reduction in price. So you only have to look at the younger generation download from the internet to realise that Music Recordings can be acquired for ZERO dollars. Their is virtually no way incentive for people to pay for downloads.

Free vs $0.99

Music isn't a career anymore, however, exploiting music to sell other products is a very lucritive way to amass WEALTH. eg. MP3 player, Radio Station, Lawyers, Hi-FI systems, Microphones, Recording Equipment.
